ABOUT THE ARTISTS
June 27th
9pm: Siach HaSadeh
Yoni Kaston – Clarinet
Joel Kerr - Double Bass
Formed on a Saturday night in the Laurentian Mountains in Quebec, Siach HaSadeh explores and
performs off the beaten track Chassidic and spiritual Jewish melodies, primarily from the early sages of the Chassidic movement, as well as some piyutim from the Eastern Jewish traditions – music that was used to express the deepest emotions, and to attain spiritual heights and closeness to the Creator, in dveikus. Much of the repertoire comes from transcriptions from songs as they are sung in the Chassidic communities of today, as well as from early 20th century recordings from Europe.
The approach to the material is reverential, and minimalist, but also improvisatory and bringing the voices of the two musicians (and guests) into the mix, drawing on their diverse musical background and experience, without losing touch with the original intent. http://www.cdbaby.com/Artist/YoniKastonJoelKerr

A sweet confection of music from Turkey and the Balkans, and Jewish music from those regions, with a subtle jazz inflection. Conceived of as a collection of voices rather than rhythm section and soloist, we bring you our lively interpretations while remaining true to the inflection, ornamentation and modality of the region.

9:30pm: noZen
Damian Nisenson – Saxophone
Steve Raegele - guitar
Jean Félix Mailloux – bass
Pierre Tanguay. – drums
Nozen’s music is at the crossroads of contemporary jazz, musique actuelle and the Jewish musical traditions of eastern Europe, and this meeting of contrasting styles gives birth to a music at once spontaneous and profound.Tanguay, Falaise and Mailloux, three of the busiest musicians on the jazz and contemporary music scene in Montreal, joined the multi-saxophonist and composer from Argentina Damian Nisenson to offer original melodies inspired by the klezmer and Hasidic traditions, processed in a decidedly contemporary context. The result is a rich blend of sounds that leads us into a world where tradition and modernity meet. http://www.myspace.com/damiannisenson

Besides the universal language of music all the communities speak their own languages & have their towns & villages scattered around the island. Small Orchestra of Hope is a title given to a band that is most fit to represent the Island to the Outside World & to the Crimeans themselves.

Ghetto Shul House band is the vision of Josh Goldman (bass) and Adam Daudrich (piano/voice) The jazz they play comes straight from the heart, from their lives as musicians. Their love for the feeling of swing, bebop, soul and raw emotional expression shines through in every note. The Ghetto Shul house band came together by hosting jam sessions at the Shul and has carried that concept into a quintet that features Bryson Barnes (tpt) and Tevet Sela (alto sax) and Efa Etoroma (drums). We are very excited to present this show during the jazz festival. This band has a sense of humour!
